7 months and a few delays later, our bedroom is complete and we are in love with the outcome!

As previously mentioned in our living room reveal, our goal for this apartment is to create a sanctuary that is cozy, comfortable, and most importantly, liveable. It’s one thing to have an aesthetically pleasing apartment for the sake of photos (for the purpose of my career) and another to actually be able to enjoy the space.

For our bedroom, I wanted it to be the ultimate zen room. I do call our office a zen space as well, since it’s full of beautiful greenery, but with the bedroom, it’s a different type of zen. There are no living plants in sight, just dried flowers and palm leaves. I took inspiration from previous Joshua Tree stays as the foundation and worked my way up from there, adding in extra comfort with a Parachute cloud quilt on top of a sateen duvet cover. The cozy-looking blanket on top of all that is actually a plush pet blanket for the cats, but of course, they have full access to all areas of the bed and sleep wherever they please. All pillow covers are from Parachute as well and we recently upgraded our mattress to a Nectar one (ours is a queen). We absolutely love our mattress and made the switch over from Lull (with no regrets).

When I think of zen, I think of being grounded and calm. To imitate this feeling, I changed our previous platform bed to this floating one. I think the style compliments our hanging nightstands from Urban Outfitters really well. To finish it off, we switched out our previous dresser for a low profile CB2 dresser that gave us more space than we previously had. I love the minimal look of the dresser, in addition to the fact that it fills up our wall space a lot more than the prior one.

Of course, you can’t have a cozy bedroom without adding in the right rug and it took me months to settle on one. I wanted to add some texture and was looking for an off-white or cream-colored rug that did not have a pattern to it. It took me forever because apparently, every rug in that color has some sort of pattern on it! Thankfully, Jenni Kayne released her collection with Lulu & Georgia recently and I fell in love with the Dune rug. It’s the perfect texture and color, and I got it in a 6’x9’, which fit perfectly in our bedroom. It doesn’t shed at all (our previous rug did for months) and feels amazing.

The finishing touches to the room are the fluffy ottoman and easy chair from Rove Concepts. I love winding down on the chair with a good book and tea during the late afternoons. It’s so comfortable and I’ve had it for over a year and a half, and it’s still in prime condition. The same goes for the ottoman, which we use to sit on occasion and/or place clothes on.

As for the decor, we kept it quite minimal. I DIY’d the piece over our bed with dried palm leaves and baby’s breath flowers that I ordered from Etsy. The two palm leaves are nailed to each other with the baby’s breath flowers tied with string around the leaves. I created a loop with the string on the back of the piece and nailed that into the wall.

Aside from that piece, the only other “statement” in the bedroom would be our art pieces from Minted. On the left is “History Repeats” and the right is “Last Tuesday”. I love the colors of the collages and the fact that the artist is from California. Minted shipped these over fairly quickly and I love that they have it framed for you too.

Every time I walk into the bedroom, wake up or go to sleep in it, I feel so at peace and calm. I love that our bedroom inspires me to rest and with the neutral color scheme, it also allows me to unwind properly without anything sticking out to grab my attention. It is the ultimate zen room for us.
