The living room is complete ya’ll! I repeat — the living is complete. For now.

Let’s be real, you are never truly done with a room, right? Refreshes and redecorating will happen, but for now, we are done with our cozy little living room.

The living room is the first room you see when you walk in, therefore, it was important to us that we created a space that’s welcoming, warming, and of course, cozy! Cozy isn’t just our overarching theme of our home, but our entire lifestyle. So, how did we achieve this?

  • Lots of fluffy throw pillows with varying textures from suede, velvet, and linen.

  • Soft throw blankets

  • A cream-colored rug from Rugs USA (risky for a high traffic place but we also don’t have guests or kids over that often)

  • A large vintage hemp floor pillow from Wayfarer

  • An extra-large leather floor pillow from Gathre (that’s so comfortable that it’s hard to get up afterward)

  • Faux fur rug that we placed on top of our entryway bench for comfortable seating

  • Linen curtains and yes, the material of your curtains matter! These Parachute ones give such a cozy vibe and they’re so soft!

These are just the main things that we’ve added to ensure that we (and guests) enjoy every area of our living room. We also want our guests to feel at home so we have a place for shoes to go, and a basket full of slippers for them to wear while visiting. There is a place for them to hang up their jackets and store their bags as well.

Of course with COVID, we’ve only had a selected handful of friends/family over with all precautions in place (we have masks on hand for guests, plenty of sanitizers, and a digital thermometer to screen). I cannot wait until it is completely safe again for all our friends/family to visit.

Aside from visuals and comfort, we also made sure that our place smells good all the time. I’m huge on scents so I always have our Vitruvi diffuser on or some candles burning. After all, who wants to walk into a smelly apartment? (Use code LISA for 20% off your Vitruvi purchase)

Since the majority of our larger furniture pieces are neutrals, we made sure to mix in some wood for warmth. Also, our living room flows straight into the dining room with no physical barriers to diving the rooms, so the wood pieces in the living room help tie in with the wood furnishing of the dining area.

Now, we love thrifting and going to estate sales so our place has a mix of both old and new pieces —

  • Coffee table: West Elm

  • Side table: estate sale find - similar options from Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Overstock

  • Couch: All Modern (sold out) - similar option here

  • Shelving unit: Ikea

  • The decor on shelving units and around the living room are mostly thrifted

I must admit that we made a few mistakes while decorating, from not properly measuring out for furniture pieces, getting pieces that looked better online than in person (the cons of shopping for furniture online), and things that just end up working out. Over the 5 months of decorating, we learned two things: always measure twice and sleep on all major furniture purchases!

We absolutely love our living room and it’s the best place to unwind at the end of each day for us. I also try to start my days here with a cup of coffee, listening to the birds outside (yes, we have birds chirping every day), and the sunlight seeps through our window beautiful in the early mornings. Needless to say, this room sparks so much joy and we hope it does for all our futures guests too.
