Gaslamp is often known for party central, but did you know it is also home to one of the cutest and most delicious cafes in town? Café 21 is located right across from one of my favorite bars, Tipsy Crow, and features live music and a fun happy hour menu. However, we visited on a Saturday morning in search of brunch and are now marking this as a must-visit every time we’re in town.
Café 21 | 802 Fifth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101
Upon stepping inside the restaurant, we noticed the Moroccan inspired décor and colors, which I absolutely loved. We opted to sit indoors by the window, which made great for people watching but the patio is also another great option if you’re catching up with friends. Sangrias are available, but they also have a long list of beverages such as craft sodas, coffee, craft beers, bloody mary’s and mimosas, teas, bubbles and bottles, and more. They also have freshly squeezed juices served daily.
If you don’t know where to start when it comes to ordering food, let me suggest the bananas fosters cast iron Dutch pancake with sweet caramel bananas and powdered sugar. The consistency of these are thick and delicious, leaving your mouth watering for more.
However, if you’re looking for something a little less sweet, try the salmon omelet, which has spinach, beet cured salmon, and mozzarella egg whites – although I had to forgo the cheese on mine.
We ordered a side of prosciutto and a salad to balance out our meals, but that plan failed as we were surprised by three desserts by the chef – chocolate truffle crepe cake, a chia seed pudding, and a crispy cronut.
Each of the desserts had their own unique flavors to it, but of the three, my favorite would have to be the crepe cake. It had the right amount of sweetness and was pretty light.
Needless to say, I cannot wait to return to San Diego so we can revisit Café 21.
